Equality Statement & Objectives

Uplands Infant School

At Uplands Infant School, we are committed to creating a community where every child feels safe, valued and able to succeed. We believe that equality it is a principle that shapes our daily practice, our curriculum, our relationships and the way we welcome every child and family into our school.

We follow the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty, and we actively promote equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of school life. Our approach aligns closely with our inclusive‑by‑design classrooms, our personalised SEND support, and our nurturing provision for new arrivals and pupils with complex needs.

Our Commitment to Equality

Eliminating Discrimination

We work proactively to eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation. This includes:

  • Clear policies on behaviour, anti‑bullying and equality
  • Staff training on recognising and challenging discrimination
  • A strong safeguarding culture supported by well‑trained staff
  • Ensuring children know who keeps them safe and who they can talk to
  • Prompt action when concerns are raised

We promote fairness for all pupils, including those with SEND, EAL, disabilities, different family structures and all protected characteristics.

Advancing Equality of Opportunity

We ensure that every child has equal access to learning, enrichment and support by:

  • Analysing attainment, progress and attendance for all groups
  • Providing targeted support where needed
  • Ensuring high‑quality, inclusive‑by‑design teaching for every child
  • Monitoring participation in clubs, trips and wider opportunities
  • Removing barriers linked to need, background or circumstance

This aligns with our SEND approach, where we adapt teaching, scaffold tasks and personalise support so that all children can thrive.

Fostering Good Relations

We build a culture of respect, understanding and belonging through:

  • A diverse, inclusive curriculum
  • High‑quality picture books that reflect many families, cultures and identities
  • Assemblies that celebrate difference and promote kindness
  • Strong relationships with parents, carers and the wider community
  • Teaching about different cultures, families and worldviews through PSHE and RE

This complements our work with new arrivals, where we ensure children with little or no English feel welcomed, supported and included from day one.

How Equality Is Embedded in Daily School Life

Equality is visible in:

  • Our inclusive classroom environments
  • Our behaviour expectations and restorative approaches
  • Our safeguarding and wellbeing work
  • Our celebration of festivals, traditions and cultural events
  • Our commitment to pupil voice and representation
  • Our accessible curriculum and reasonable adjustments for SEND
  • Our nurturing support for new arrivals and EAL learners
  • Our internal alternative provision, The Nest, for pupils with complex needs

We want every child to feel seen, safe, included and able to succeed.

Monitoring Our Equality Work

We regularly review:

  • Attainment and progress
  • Attendance patterns
  • Behaviour and safeguarding logs
  • Participation in enrichment
  • Feedback from pupils, parents and staff

This ensures our equality work remains active, meaningful and effective.

Our Promise

Through our equality work, we aim for every child at Uplands Infant School to feel:

  • Seen – their identity, culture and strengths recognised
  • Safe – protected, supported and cared for
  • Included – welcomed and celebrated for who they are
  • Able to achieve their very best
